Michigan football memories and more from a New Yorker's perspective.

  • โ€œDefense wins championships.โ€ Itโ€™s a cliche used in football circles for eons. A quick look at Northwesternโ€™s coaching staff makes it clear. The Wildcats have some pretty familiar names on their defensive coaching staff. Safeties coach Harlan Barnett played at Michigan State, where he was named a first team All-American in 1989. Cornerbacks coach LaMarcus Hicks played at Iowa State, where he led the conference in interceptions during his senior year.

With these coaches on the sideline, Northwestern has quietly built a very strong defense. This defense was on display last Saturday at Penn State. That defense should lead the way to a win over Purdue tomorrow.

  • First things first: Penn State fired James Franklin on Sunday, following the Nittany Lionsโ€™ 22-21 loss to Northwestern. Franklin revitalized the  program, but the bar at Penn State will always be very high. Many people thought Penn State had a legitimate chance to win the National Championship this season. Instead, the Nittany Lions are searching for a coach.

There are a lot of names being thrown around. Curt Cignetti. Matt Rhule. Matt Campbell. Brent Key. And thatโ€™s just to hame a few.

Simply put, this is an important hire for the Penn State program. Expectations are always high in Happy Valley. The team needs a spark. What better way than to use a Candle?

In this case, Jason Candle, who coaches Toledo and graduated from Mount Union. Look at that second portion. Mount Union has become the modern โ€œcradle of coaches;โ€ seizing that mantle from Miami of Ohio. Candle previously coached with Campbell twice, and has served as Toledoโ€™s head coach since 2016, amassing a record of 76-43. Heโ€™s led Toledo to two 11-win seasons over that time. As a native of Ohio, he can recruit both Pennsylvania and Ohio well. He also has plenty of players from Florida on his roster.

Is that a guarantee that heโ€™s the answer to Penn Stateโ€™s hopes and dreams? No, but he has all the qualifications. At 45, heโ€™s young enough to handle the rigors of a Big Ten season.

I split three games this past weekend. I got one right and one wrong, while a third ended as a push. Not great, but not bad, either.

  • After the first  couple of games this season, I would have picked Missouri to knock off Alabama. Things are slowly trending up for the Crimson Tide. Kalen DeBoer seems like heโ€™s figuring out how to coach in the SEC.

It also helps that he has the right quarterback now. Ty Simpson is a better QB for the DeBoer system than Jalen Milroe, and it shows. Alabama is now connecting on more deep throws. Those long connections will be critical as Alabama tops Missouri.ย

Iowa State lost for the first time last weekend, but donโ€™t expect the Cyclones to lose two in a row. Look for Iowa State QB Rocco Becht to get back on track against the Colorado defense.

  • Western Kentucky has been scoring points in droves, and graduate student quarterback Maverick McIvor is having quite a season. Delaware is led by quarterback Nick Minicucci, a native of Midland Park, N.J. Minicucci has passed for 1,058 yards, with eight touchdowns and two interceptions. Itโ€™ll be a barnburner, and Delaware should win, but Western Kentucky will cover.

Iowa State and Cincinnati have both enjoyed quietly strong seasons to this point. Cincinnati is fresh off an upset win at Kansas. Matt Campbell has Iowa State playing consistently strong football, and the Hawkeyes win this one outright.

  • As expected, Army wasnโ€™t able to contain the athleticism of North Texas. That game turned into a track meet. North Texas had a big advantage. In Salt Lake City, the rabid Utah fan base had little effect on Texas Tech, which dominated Utah. Duke used three touchdown passes from Darian Mensah and three rushing touchdowns from Anderson Castle to top a mistake-prone North Carolina State squad.

As always, the results are directly beneath the predictions, with the winners in ALL CAPS. ENJOY!

  • Itโ€™s tough to figure out Jeff Monken teams. Sometimes, theyโ€™re incredibly gritty and tough. Other times, teams can overwhelm them. Why? Well, the Cadets are very tough due to their discipline, resilience, and conditioning. On the other hand, they usually donโ€™t have many elite football players, so theyโ€™ll have some trouble at times.

When Army played Tarleton State, the Black Knights threw for only 131 yards, and that contributed to their defeat. One week later, the Black Knights showed impressive tenacity against Kansas State, which led to a comeback win.

On Saturday, Army hosts North Texas. In this one, North Texas has shown the ability to score points in droves. I think that will be the deciding factor.

Texas Tech travels to Salt Lake City to face Utah. Both teams are off to 3-0 starts, and have been impressive on both offense and defense. The crowd at Rice-Eccles Stadium provides an underrated home-field advantage in college football. This should lead Utah to the crunch. Utah coach Kyle Whittingham will take the air out of the ball. Utah will use long drives to keep Texas Techโ€™s offense off the field and the Utes get a critical win.ย

On the surface, North Carolina State appears to have a much better team than Duke. However, football is a interesting game, and good defense can keep a game close. I think the Duke defensive line will make things for the Wolfpack, and North Carolina State quarterback C.J. Bailey will have a tough time developing a rhythm. It wonโ€™t be pretty, but Duke will get a win that will save the season.ย

  • Well, I said that Pitt would win the game, but I also had West Virginia winning the spread, so I won that one. I also got my coach prediction a little wrong. It seems that Rich Rodriguez may be recapturing his old magic. Meanwhile, Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi looks like heโ€™s running out of time.

Georgia won, but the Bulldogs did not cover the spread. If I were going to hire a defensive coordinator, I donโ€™t think Iโ€™d put Glenn Schumann at the top of my list.

I didnโ€™t write about it, but the early indications are the LSU coach Brian Kelly suddenly looks like heโ€™s recovered his old spark. Of course, each season is different.

Matt Campbell and Iowa State have clearly taken the upper hand in their in-state rivalry with Iowa. The Cyclones used tough defense and a clutch 54-yard field goal by Kyle Konrardy to top Iowa by three points.

In West Viriginia, Rich Rodriguez is still struggling to regain the swagger from his first tour as the Mountaineersโ€™ head coach, as Ohio topped West Virginia 17-10.
